Of Roman origin, you/he/she was founded by inhabitants
coming from Paestum submitted to the looting by the hordes
of the Barbarians; you/he/she has followed the fates of the
Republic Marinara in Amalfi, becoming center of the school
nautica. During the XVI and XVII century became
wealthy enormously, thanks to its ships that ploughed the
Mediterranean, proposing, even though for brief period, the
fame of the Republic Marinara. Positioned in the three
small valleys, it contains in his/her territory different
towers with defensive purposes, made to build both along the
dorsal coastline, and internally to the city territory. The
houses then, in Baroque style, they grab on to the steep
rocks, while their look he turns toward that unbelievable
blue and green of the sea that licks up the beaches.
To visit...
the church of Saint Maria Assunta, realized in the XIII century, whose dome is entirely mosaic maiolicata. Once the floor was Byzantine; of it preserves a panel in the area absidale. You preserves anchor, on the most greater altar, a Byzantine icon with the relief of the Black Madonna with Child, whose legend, narrates by sea of its
arrival.
